Architectural fixtures — facade grazers, in-ground uplights, step and landscape lights — live or die on their specification sheet. Once you know what each line means, comparing two fixtures becomes straightforward. Here is a plain-English tour of the numbers that matter.

Lumen output and efficacy

Lumens are the total light produced. Efficacy (lumens per watt, lm/W) tells you how efficiently the fixture makes that light — a higher lm/W means more light for the same energy. Compare fixtures on delivered lumens for the effect you want, then use efficacy as a tie-breaker.

Beam angle

Beam angle shapes the effect. A narrow beam (10–24°) is for grazing a tall facade or accenting a tree; a medium beam (25–40°) suits walls and shrubs; a wide beam (60°+) washes broad surfaces. The same lamp at a different beam angle produces a completely different result.

Colour quality: CRI and colour temperature

Colour Rendering Index (CRI) describes how true colours look under the light; CRI 80 is standard and CRI 90+ is worth specifying where materials and planting need to read accurately. Colour temperature (in Kelvin) sets the mood — 2700–3000K warm for residential and heritage, 4000K neutral for contemporary and commercial facades.

Ingress and impact protection

Outdoor architectural fixtures should be IP65 or higher; in-ground fixtures that may sit in water need IP67 or IP68. Where fixtures are walk-over or exposed to impact, check the IK rating too.

Materials and corrosion

Marine-grade stainless steel, powder-coated or anodised aluminium, and quality gaskets determine how a fixture ages outdoors — especially in coastal Australia. The housing material and finish are as important as the electronics.

Lifespan and dimming

LED lifespan is usually quoted as an L70 figure (for example, L70 at 50,000 hours), meaning the point at which output has fallen to 70% of the original. Also confirm the dimming protocol (mains, 0–10V, DALI) matches your control system, and check the warranty terms.
