Pro-Grade Strip Light Customisation

LED strip is the most flexible product in lighting — you can cut it to length, bend it around a cove and run it under a cabinet. That flexibility is also where people come unstuck. Here is how to plan a strip run so it is even, bright and reliable.

Read the reel first

Before anything else, note four numbers from the strip's specification: LEDs per metre (density), voltage (usually 12V or 24V), lumens or watts per metre, and the IP rating. Higher density gives a smoother line of light with fewer visible dots — important behind diffusers and in coves. 24V strip is generally the better choice for longer runs because it handles voltage drop better than 12V.

Cutting and connecting

Strip can only be cut at the marked cut points (usually every 50–100 mm) — cutting elsewhere kills the segment. Join sections with solder for the most reliable result, or with quality clip connectors where soldering is not practical. Keep connectors accessible; buried connectors are the most common failure point.

Size the power supply

Add up the wattage of your total run, then add around 20% headroom so the driver is not running at its limit. For example, a strip drawing 10 W per metre over 5 m needs 50 W; with headroom, choose a 60 W driver. Undersized drivers run hot and fail early.

Manage voltage drop

On long runs the far end looks dimmer than the start — that is voltage drop. Two fixes: keep individual runs within the strip's rated maximum length, and where you need more, inject power at both ends or feed from the middle rather than daisy-chaining one long line.

Dimming and control

Match the dimming method to the driver. Options include TRIAD/mains dimming, 0–10V, PWM and smart controllers for colour-changing (RGB/RGBW) strip. Mixing an incompatible dimmer and driver causes flicker or buzz, so confirm the pairing before you install.

Outdoors and in wet areas

For bathrooms, kitchens splashbacks and outdoor coves, use IP65 or higher strip and matching sealed connectors and drivers. Keep the driver itself in a dry, ventilated location.
